Icon: Tilda Swinton

Avant-garde, ingenious, bizarre, androgynous, crazy, clean, sophisticated, bold and eclectic - these are just some of the attributes used by fashion critics to describe Tilda Swinton’s style. This year on November 5th, Swinton will celebrate her 54th birthday, as we and many others globally celebrate her very personal, ever evolving style.

Swinton has gained her popularity by impressive cinematic roles and equally impressive appearances on the red carpet. In fact, it seems that currently, in her sixth decade, she is more fashionable than ever. Recently to name a few placements, designer Karl Lagerfeld, who is known to carefully select young and fresh muses, chose Swinton as his muse for the ‘Pre-Winter 2014 Chanel Collection’ and she was also asked to star in a David Bowie’s music video, ‘The Stars Are Out Tonight’. This intriguing, style icon has graced many fashion magazine covers, among them the amazing artistic cover of AnOther(S/S 09), along with the beautiful cover of W (May 2013) and  now today, we now find her as the new Spring face of Nars Cosmetics.

Swinton's romance with fashion began in 2000, shortly before the release of the movie "The Beach" where she appeared alongside Leonardo DiCaprio. At that time she had not experienced the red carpet and was largely an unknown avant-garde actress who collaborated with directors Derek Jarman and Sally Potter. Thus, and to avoid embarrassing mistakes, she turned to her friend Jerry Stafford who soon became her constant styling consultant. Stafford introduced Swinton to designers Viktor & Rolf who soon become enthusiastic about her unique look and embraced her by making her their muse. Later, the open hands by Alber Elbaz, Haider Ackermann and Stefano Pilati (designer of Yves Saint Laurent) and Raf Simons who served as a creative director at Jill Sander also collaborated with this beauty.

We are thankful Tilda Swinton has never being bound by immediate and current trends. She epitomises a winning combination of a bold and adventurous style with one that has its limits and corresponds to the age and structure of the body. In particular, we love the fact that Swinton is a perfect example of great style that has no expiry date!
